What does it take to be a good catechist? How can you share the gift of faith?
Like the sower in the parable of Jesus, catechists, teachers, religious educators, and parish ministers are called to continue sowing the seed by proclaiming through voice and action the word of God. Catechists are also charged with the task of preparing the soil to receive the word and creating an environment for it to take root and multiply. The catechist must be a person of faith, someone willing to share the gift of faith.
In When You Are a Catechist, veteran catechist Judith Dunlap offers inspiration and practical help about the call to serve, the gift of faith, the gift of prayer and ritual, the gift of community, and the gift of self. She helps new and experienced catechists unwrap each of these gifts and discover new ways to share them in their ministry. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion as well as quotes from Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the General Directory for Catechesis.
JUDITH DUNLAP has more than 25 years’ experience in religious education and family-based catechesis. She is a catechetical consultant for Franciscan Media, author of Practical Catechesis: Visions and Tasks for Catechetical Leaders and co-author of the God Is Calling series (St. Anthony Messenger Press).
